Thursday, 18 April 2024 SECOND UPGRADE FAIR IN APRIL - EXPAND YOUR KNOWLEDGE!

Your first degree is often an opportunity to think about the direction of your studies and career, as there are many different paths you can take. In order to provide as much support and help as possible to all students, UP has designed a postgraduate fair that goes beyond the presentation of faculty courses.

Thus, the fair was held on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, in Museum Square and the UP Famnit foyer, where each faculty presented their own programs as well as the possibility of transferring between courses within a faculty or university, as conditions vary. In addition, the UP Career Center and the UP Human Resources Service offered advice - the latter also presented the various employment opportunities at the UP. Particular attention was paid to the possibility of a career orientation towards research, which was presented by both the UP IAM and the UP Science Center. The international orientation of the university was represented by the Internationalization section, where they were able to learn about the many opportunities for cooperation with foreign countries made possible by UP's strong international commitment. The student councils and the UP tutors provide and represent an important support for the colleagues during their studies.

A special feature of the event was the discussion points where students, alumni and staff were available to share their experiences and impressions about studying in parallel, changing programs completely, changing programs partially - acquiring other skills, re-enrolling at the same level of study after graduation, working as a young researcher at UP, working in UP's professional offices, studying at a more mature age and graduating after the thesis or thesis still needs to be written.

More information about each program will be provided to all interested students at faculty information sessions announced through their own channels.

Monday, 15 April 2024 The 5th lecture of Famnits' excursion into the mathematical universe 2023/24

You are kindly invited to the 5th lecture entitled

» Discovering Hidden Order in the Chaos

which will be held on Wednesday, 24 April, at 18:00, in the lecture room- VP3 and via ZOOM.

The lecture will be given by Dr. Alejandra Ramos Rivera, UP in IMFM.

Have you ever wondered if there is a method to what appears to be randomness? Join us on a journey into the fascinating world where order is created out of what appears to be chaos. During this talk, we will explore how patterns unexpectedly appear in seemingly unrelated things. From everyday situations to puzzles that baffle mathematicians, we will show the surprising cases where structure arises naturally. During this talk we will consider questions such as:  how large must the set of numbers, points or objects be in order to find a pattern? Can we always find a highly regular pattern? We will look at some examples and open problems in different areas of mathematics that people are interested in nowadays.

Alejandra Ramos Rivera completed her undergraduate studies in applied mathematics at the Metropolitan Autonomous University in Mexico City (2012) and pursued a master's degree in mathematical sciences at the Mathematical Institute of UNAM (2014), where she worked in the field of abstract polytopes. She obtained her PhD in mathematics in 2019 at the Andrej Marušič Institute of the University of Primorska. She is currently employed at the University of Primorska and at the Institute of Mathematics, Physics, and Mechanics in Ljubljana. Her research interest lies in the application of algebraic tools for studying symmetry in discrete objects and related areas.

Thursday, 11 April 2024 Launch of the NEBA Alliance at the NEB Festival in Brussels

The NEB Academy, a flagship initiative of the European Commission, has set out to accelerate the up- and re-skilling of architecture, construction, and engineering (ACE) professionals and adjacent actors. Through a network of training hubs across Europe that bundle regional competencies and facilitate access to contents on sustainability, circularity and bio-based material knowledges. A strong partnership of universities, regional training centres, authorities and EU associations has kicked of the NEBA Alliance to co-create this novel platform for the construction sector.

The urgency of the climate crisis and the construction sector being responsible for more than 40% of GHG emissions requires accelerating the transfer and adoption of climate change mitigation skills and tools to workers, businesses, policy makers, and the public. Therefore, Ursula Von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, announced the NEB Academy in November 2022 as a main flagship of the New European Bauhaus.

The initiative will make training materials easily accessible and offer courses in real-time. They are delivered through an international network establishing a growing number of Hubs across Europe that have regional coverage and expertise in specific topics. In this way, these tailored programs support the transition from a linear and fossil-based system to a more circular, regenerative and distributive economy designed to thrive within the planetary boundaries.

The NEB Academy aims to raise awareness, improve skills, and encourage commitment among stakeholders to drive change. Enhancing biobased industrialisation and digitalisation in the construction sector, the second largest industrial ecosystem in the EU, will create opportunities to attract young talent and skilled workers, contributing to the growth of the circular bioeconomy and the EU Green Deal. The initiative supports the goal of creating 160,000 additional green jobs in the EU construction sector through the Renovation Wave.

The NEB Academy will establish an open marketplace to match high quality training offers with skills needs and demands of different target groups. Setting up a central portal and database of certified training materials, courses, and modules, along with a selection of best practices in pedagogies it will enable widespread scaling of training on bio-based materials in sustainable construction. The curated NEB Academy course catalogue, validated according to thematic domains and NEB values, will allow trainers and trainees to immediately find the best suited training opportunities.

“Providing training for actors all across the construction ecosystem, and spread all around Europe, will help increase the use of biomaterials and ensure more people have access to healthy, beautiful buildings for work, living, and learning.”

Prof. Andreja Kutnar, University of Primorska, Slovenia, Coordinator of NEBA Alliance

“I welcome the New European Bauhaus Academy Alliance, a powerhouse of 14 European partners, ready to launch its EU-wide training network. It will be a solid support for Europe's construction industry, addressing labour shortages and promoting knowledge sharing including on sustainable bio-based solutions, like the circular use of wood and other innovative materials.”

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission

“The New European Bauhaus is about bringing the European Green Deal to our living spaces. To make it a success, we need to equip our construction sector with the skills and knowledge it needs to tap into the potential of sustainable solutions. This is where the NEB Academy will make a difference.”

Iliana Ivanova, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth

“I welcome the New European Bauhaus Academy Alliance which, through its diverse expertise across the EU, will address skill gaps in the sustainable and circular construction sector and create better employment opportunities at the regional and national level, while promoting high-quality and inclusiveness in construction.

Elisa Ferreira, Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms

Thursday, 11 April 2024 Successful conclusion of the ReNature project - restoring wetlands and meadows

After two years, the ReNature project - restoring wetlands and meadows successfully concluded in the Škocjan Caves Park, which are important for Natura 2000 and other protected species and habitat types in the Karst, the basin of Reka river and the Pivka intermittent lakes Nature Park

As part of the project, experts from UP Famnit (Department of Biodiversity) in the fields of biology, ecology, and nature conservation, as well as partners from the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research, collaborated. They mapped and described ecosystem services (human benefits from the local landscape and nature) provided by meadow and wetland ecosystems.

On Tuesday, 9 April 2024, the presentation of activities carried out over the past two years, followed by a press conference, and an excursion through the Karst Biosphere Reserve with a visit to restored wetlands, newly established grasslands, and high-stem orchards.

The most extensive renovation of meadows was carried out in the area of Vremščica, where, under the guidance of the Veterinary Faculty (University of Ljubljana), they cleared 39 hectares of overgrown land, thus providing additional grazing space for the flock of indigenous Istrian Pramenka sheep, which will prevent re-overgrowth.

A few more than five hectares of meadows have also been restored in the municipality of Pivka, thus contributing to the preservation of habitat for important bird and butterfly species. Near the Ravne Castle, they planted a small meadow orchard, as these are also becoming rare, yet they provide a home to several bird species. In the Brkini area, the Škocjan Caves Park has restored several wetland habitats, eight ponds, and one arched or locally known "velban" spring, which is a characteristic feature of the Brkini region.

Experts also teamed up with locals, jointly recognizing the importance of preserving cultural landscapes and heritage. Village communities took over the task of maintaining the ponds. They reached agreements with farmers to assist in preserving the meadows.

The areas areconsidered highly efficient carbon sinks and habitats for European protected species of animals and plants under the Natura 2000 network. Their functions are vital for the survival of various plant and animal species as well as for human activities, which are rapidly disappearing due to climate change, drought, erosion, changes in land use, and the introduction of alien plant and animal species. The project aimed to stop with disappearance.

ReNature is implemented within the framework of the Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation programme.

In addition to UP Famnit, the Municipality of Pivkathe Veterinary Faculty of the University of Ljubljana and the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA) were participating in the project, whose leading partner is the Škocjan Caves Public Institute. The 1.2 million euros worth project was financed in part by funds from the Norwegian Financial Mechanism.

Wednesday, 10 April 2024 Taking Citizen Science in a New Direction: The international project Step Change concludes

Last week, the 5th conference of the European Citizen Science Association (ECSA) took place in Vienna, including the closing event of the international Step Change project. Under the slogan »Taking Citizen Science in a New Direction, One Step at a Time,« partners presented the results of all working groups (Citizen Science Initiatives) and horizontal activities. Representatives of UP FAMNIT, the leading partner of the project, also attended the event.

As part of the conference, an associated event titled »Citizen Science Day« took place at the Natural History Museum in Vienna. Representatives from the molecular ecology group at UP FAMNIT presented various methods for monitoring wildlife in Slovenia (camera traps, the SRNA app, eDNA) and conducted a short memory game with children related to the SRNA app (for monitoring wildlife).

ECSA 2024 was held under the patronage of Dr.  Alexander Van der Bellen, Federal President of the Republic of Austria.

About the Step Change Project

The international Step Change project is conducted under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. It is led and coordinated by the Department of Biodiversity at UP FAMNIT with prof. Elena Bužan as the project leader. The project, worth over 2 million euros, launched in March 2021 and is based on the expertise of 11 partners from 7 European countries and Uganda.

STEP CHANGE builds on the assumption that citizen science can play an even broader societal and scientific role than is generally acknowledged. The overall objective of the project is to explore the potential of citizen science and to formulate recommendations and instruments for better cementing this approach within R&I institutions as well as changing researchers’ mindsets on its value.

In Slovenia, the initiative focuses on wildlife conservation in Slovenia, which will contribute to additional development of the Hunting Information System (HIS) and further the cooperation between leading researchers of game in Slovenia and the Hunting Association of Slovenia.

The project will officially conclude on April 30, 2024.

Wednesday, 10 April 2024 WINGS FOR LIFE GROUP RUN WITH THE APP ORGANISED BY UP

For several years now, the first Sunday in May (5 May) has been marked by the Wings For Life run, which takes place in three ways - at a larger event, where runners are chased by a pursuit vehicle (this will be in Ljubljana) or with an app. This can be used by anyone who is going to run on Sunday at 13:00, or you can join one of the "app runs" organised by the app, where you are chased by a virtual car. This year, for the second time, this type of run will take place by the sea, organised by Sport UP, which is responsible for the recreation of students and staff at the University of Primorska. We will run from the building of the UP FTŠ Turistica to the last pier of the Portorož beach (short run, turning point after 2 km), to Seča (medium run, 4.4 km one way) or to the Sečovlje Salt Pans (8 km). This year our event is also supported by Radio Capris.

With the run, we want to first of all encourage students and staff to enjoy additional recreation and pleasant socialising, and above all to help the charity project, as we are aware of the importance of supporting good research projects. We would like to invite local and regional runners who have not chosen to run in the capital but would prefer to run in the company of others to join us. And we will all follow the slogan of the run - I run for those who can't.

We will be especially inspired by the SportUP Wings for life World Run 2023 - App Campus Run UP ambassador, namely our alumnus Aljoša Habjan, a graduate of Applied Kinesiology at UP FVZ. Aljoša was severely injured during his studies and became a tetraplegic. Nevertheless, he persevered and passed all the missing courses and subjects and successfully defended his final thesis entitled »Physical/sport activity of tetraplegics« in December 2022, under the mentorship of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Matej Plevnik. His story about the accident that did not stop him will surely be a motivation for all of us.

You can register for the run via the run app, where you can also make a donation of 18,00 EUR. There are no other costs for joining the organised run, and the UP Faculty of Education will also provide animation and childcare for the runners' children (from the age of 5, with prior registration HERE). After the run, all runners will be offered a drink and a snack on the terrace of the UP Turistica, where they can mingle and share impressions.

Not a runner, but interested in helping? We need hard-working hands to help direct runners along the route, hand out water and other refreshments and food, and help set up the event with us. Are you coming? Please sign up HERE.

Wednesday, 10 April 2024 Two new projects at UP FAMNIt and UP IAM in March

EUROPEAN COMMISSION'S EU4Health PROGRAMMEEUROPEAN COMMISSION'S EU4Health PROGRAMME

Modular Mental Health Toolbox, partners, lead organization: European Alliance Against Depression (EAAD), UP IAM, UP lead: dr. Vita Poštuvan

The MentBox project aims to bridge the gap between existing good practice in the field of mental health and the capacity of EU Member States to implement it effectively. The project aims to identify and adapt promising mental health interventions, especially those focusing on depression, suicide and non-clinical mental disorders. Through the Modular Mental Health Toolbox (MH Toolbox), the project will provide detailed guidance for implementation, including evidence-based interventions from past and ongoing EU-funded projects. These interventions will be optimized in collaboration with ministries, health professionals, patients and minority groups and tailored to the different EU Member States. Patients and people with experience will also contribute to the development of the measures to ensure their relevance and acceptance. Following the project, the MHToolbox will be managed by the European Alliance for the Prevention of Depression (EAAD), which is coordinating the project with partners UP, Universidad Autonoma de Madrid, Servicio Andaluz de Salud, Fundación Pública Andaluza Investiga and the Global Alliance of Mental Illness Advocacy Networks AISBL.

ERC COMPLEMENTARY SCHEME (ARIS)

Beyond sparsity: graph classes and width parameters, lead partner UP FAMNIT, partner UP IAM, project leader: dr. Martin Milanič, partner leader: dr. Nina Chiarelli

Graph Sparsity Theory by Nešetřil and Ossona de Mendez is a very active and rapidly developing topic in combinatorics and graph theory, with applications in many areas such as algorithmic graph theory, complexity theory and property testing. A recent focus of structural and algorithmic graph theory is the extension of the theory of sparsity of graphs to dense graph classes. The proposed project aims to present new ways and methods to achieve this goal. This is done along the following two interrelated lines of research: first, by advancing the recently emerged and rapidly evolving theory of graph width and depth parameters through a general framework based on graph measures and an in-depth analysis of known and novel graph parameters; second, by developing a biparametric theory of hereditary graph classes in which one parameter is bounded by a function of another, with the aim of identifying nontrivial structural and algorithmic implications. Our approach complements the theory of graph classes with bounded flip-width recently developed by Toruńczyk and will lead to a better understanding of tractability bounds for the maximum independent set and several other practically relevant graph optimization problems.

Tuesday, 9 April 2024 UP FAMNIT student won 3rd place at the final of the POPRI competition

Last week, on April 4th, 2024, the final of the National Youth Entrepreneurial Ideas Competition - POPRI took place in Nova Gorica, where as many as 103 aspiring young entrepreneurs competed in the final.

Teams were categorised by primary school students, high school students, and young participants up to the age of 29, who obtained cash prizes and the opportunity to participate in international competitions and professional excursions abroad. Distinguished entrepreneurs on the jury decided who best developed their idea into a business model and presented it most confidently.

Matic Bončina, recipient of 3rd place in the final of the POPRI competition

In the category of young participants up to the age of 29, Matic Bončina, a first-year student in the Computer Science programme (UP FAMNT), together with Matej Aleksov (University of Ljubljana), presented their idea in the final of the competition, where they introduced the online service Repono and secured an excellent 3rd place. A month earlier, they had won an excellent 1st place at the regional competition.

                                                                               Repono Website

The online service is intended for students living in dormitories or private accommodations, allowing for the safe storage and relocation of belongings during vacations or off-season periods. The main purpose and operation of Repono are summarized by Matic Bončin, the service developer: “At Repono, we take care of everything, from providing packing materials to safely storing students' belongings and arranging pickup and delivery, all facilitated through a user-friendly online platform. This enables students to focus solely on their studies during exam periods without the additional stress of moving.”

The top three teams in the category up to the age 29, will also be able to benefit from entrepreneurial training abroad within the Erasmus programme, facilitated by Ljubljana Technology Park.

This year, compete almost 30 percent more young people in the national competition for entrepreneurial ideas, which means 607 participants who have developed 203 innovative business models.

Popri competition is organised by the Primorska Technology Park in cooperation with the Ministry of the Economy, Tourism and Sport, SPIRIT Slovenia Business Development Agency, and the Slovene Enterprise Fund (SEF), which also provides the prize pool of the competition. Other organizers are the Government Office for Slovenians Abroad, the City Municipality of Nova Gorica, and the Municipality of Šempeter-Vrtojba.

Congratulations!
