Friday, 30 August 2024 Wood for Sustainable Built Environment Summer School successfully concludes!
The transformation of the construction industry into a more sustainable and circular sector is one of the major challenges of modern society, as it is linked to two of the most pressing challenges of the 21st century, the environmental and housing crises. Educating tomorrow's generation of professionals, who will shape a better future through their innovations and work, is the first step towards starting change and building a sustainable, digital and inclusive society.
The Wood for Sustainable Built Environment Summer School brought together experts from the InnoRenew CoE Research Institute and the Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Information Technologies of the University of Primorska, who shared their extensive knowledge with 16 participants from 10 countries, many of them coming to Izola from very distant countries in South America. The importance and excellence of the summer school was also recognised by the prestigious German foundation DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst / German Academic Exchange Service) who included in its initiative "Go-East Summer- and Winter School 2024", which supports the participation of German students in summer schools in Southern and Eastern Europe.
The programme coordinator of the summer school, Prof. Dr. Andreja Kutnar, also Head of the New European Bauhaus Academy Pioneer Hub for Sustainable Built Environments with Renewable Materials (NEBAP Hub) and Director of the InnoRenew CoE, gathered together a diverse team and prepared an even more diverse programme. Participants gained a range of new skills at the summer school that will better equip them for their future career paths. Under the guidance of renowned experts and researchers, they learned about the properties and applications of engineered wood products in construction, the characteristics and types of timber buildings, the acoustic properties of timber buildings, the basics of using digital tools in the design and study of built environments, and restorative environments and ergonomic design. The latter are particularly important as, in addition to environmental care, they also contribute to the experience and well-being of the users of built environments.
The lectures were accompanied by workshops where participants had the opportunity to test their knowledge with their own hands. In three groups, they created schematic models of houses that would be able to cope with all the challenges of the climate in Slovenian Istria. Each group focused on one feature and devoted their attention to it. The group led by Lea Primožič developed a model in accordance with the principles of Restorative Ergonomic Environments (REED). Acoustics was the focus of Urban Kavka's group and the moisture content of timber and timber buildings was the focus of Richard Acquah's group. The work of all the groups was supervised by the renowned expert in the field of wood properties and manufacturing process, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jakub Sandak.
The organisers also organised excursions to Škocjanski zatok, the Servite Monastery in Koper, Jelovica and IQ-Wood. They were also introduced to the world of business at lectures, where Uroš Gruden from URSA and Bogdan Božac from Lumar presented the companies' stories and the path to success.
The summer school will also have a long-lasting impact, as the experience and knowledge gained by the lecturers, will be invaluable for the preparation of a new first-level study programme at UP FAMNIT called Innovations in Wood Technology for Sustainable Development and the future development of the NEBAP Hub. The new study programme is being developed as part of the Green, Digital and Inclusive University of Primorska (GDI UP) project.

Tuesday, 20 August 2024 Start of the Wood for Sustainable Built Environment Summer School
In the next two weeks, the InnoRenew Centre of Excellence in Izola will host the first international school on wood and its use in sustainable construction. The summer school, entitled Wood for Sustainable Built Environment, is the result of a joint effort of the research institute InnoRenew CoE and of UP FAMNIT.
The Summer School has attracted well-established experts and aspiring students from as many as ten countries. During the Summer School, they will listen to a wide range of experts from UP FAMNIT and InnoRenew, who will introduce them to modern approaches to sustainable and circular building materials, both in theory and in practice, with wood receiving the most attention.
A rainy morning accompanied the participants on their arrival at the premises of the largest wooden building in Slovenia. They were welcomed by the programme manager of the summer school, the director of InnoRenew CoE and the head of the New European Bauhaus Pioner Hub, Prof. Dr. Andreja Kutnar. She delighted everyone by listing all the educational and interesting things that awaited them in the coming days.
The presentation of the building where the participants were located was next on the agenda. Eva Prelovšek Niemelä, designer of the InnoRenew CoE building, presented a number of fascinating and innovative approaches to her work in designing the largest timber building in Slovenia. She did not leave out the challenges they faced while working on such a pioneering project and how they overcame them. Many participants had faced similar problems in the past, so there was no shortage of questions.
During the summer school, participants will put their new knowledge and old skills to the test in practice. As safety comes first, we couldn't miss the lecture and the conscience test, where everyone was taught how to work safely and skilfully with tools in the workshops. Throughout the summer school, the participants, under the guidance and advice of InnoRenew CoE researchers, will create schematic houses that should be able to cope with all the environmental impacts of Slovenian Istria. They will also test their work with a series of measurements that will indicate the quality of the final products.
The day concluded with presenting the InnoRenew CoE premises and research equipment. The participants were guided around the facilities by Associate Prof. Dr. Jakub Sandak, who is also one of the members of the The New European Bauhaus Academy Pioneer Hub. He presented some of the achievements of the NEBAP Hub to date. This summer school will be an important milestone for it, as sustainable building experts will work with the participants to gain valuable information on how they can further improve their teaching on sustainable construction.

Tuesday, 13 August 2024 Nina Krohne first Doctor of Science from the Suicidology and Mental Health Programme
Today, on 13 August, Nina Krohne successfully defended her PhD thesis entitled Suicidal Behavior in Women: The Role of Intimate Partner Violence and Resilience to Suicidality, under the supervision of Associate Professor Vita Poštuvan and Professor Diego De Leo.
Dr Nina Krohne is the first PhD student of the Suicidology and Mental Health programme, which is being implemented at the UP Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Information Technologies in collaboration with the UP IAM Slovene Centre for Suicide Research since 2021.
It is a specialised study programme that prepares students for independent and internationally competitive scientific research work in the fields of suicidology and mental health. At the same time, it is the first doctoral programme in the field of suicidology in Slovenia, which is an important national asset due to the problems of suicidal behaviour and the need to develop high-quality research in the field.
Dr Krohne's thesis addresses two important public health issues - female suicidal behaviour and intimate partner violence. Female suicidal behaviour is less well researched due to the lower suicide rate among women compared to men, while intimate partner violence is part of a larger societal problem - gender-based violence, which is rooted in patriarchal societal structures. Her thesis explores the epidemiological and psychological dimensions of these issues, and in particular focuses on women's experiences and provides a theoretical basis for interventions in this area.
Mentor Dr Vita Poštuvan said about the thesis: "Nina’s work also represents a scientific and research excellence in the use of more advanced methods of data analysis, e.g. through a complex network analysis or relationships between the concepts studied and through a detailed segmentation of the population of women experiencing intimate partner violence: that is, how they differ in their coping, what helps them in crisis situations and also in their ability to leave dysfunctional relationships. This also gives this scientific work an applied clinical-psychological relevance, as it will help psychological interventions targeting this vulnerable population."
We would like to congratulate the new Doctor of Science and wish her a successful continuation of her research career!
