Researchers from the Slovenian Center for Suicide Research, which operates within the UP Andrej Marušič Institute, won the organization of another important scientific meeting with their candidacy in 2018: the World Congress of the International Association for Suicide Prevention - IASP.
The congress is held every two years. In 2021 suicidology experts from all over the world will meet in Australia, and in 2025 in Vienna.
The organization of the congress in 2023 is an outstanding achievement for the Slovenian Center for Suicide Research, as it is an international confirmation of the quality of many years of excellent work in the field of scientific study of suicide and in the implementation of various educational programs, projects and interventions for the general public.
The vision of the center is to provide high-quality research to better understand and explain suicidal behavior, which contributes to both suicide prevention and the support for suicide loss survivors. You can read more about the operation of the center at www.zivziv.si.
Hosting such an important event is therefore also of importance for the wider field of professionals, thus the application was supported by both the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport of the Republic of Slovenia, as well as the National Institute of Public Health, the Slovenian Psychologists' Association and the European Federation of Psychologists' Associations, as well as the Municipality of Piran and the Radio-Television of Slovenia, as responsible journalistic reporting is one of the foundations of suicide prevention.
About the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP)
The association was founded in 1960 by Austrian psychiatrist and neurologist Erwin Ringel and American psychologist Norman Farberow, who are considered pioneers among world-class suicide researchers. Today, it brings together experts and volunteers from more than 50 countries to conduct research on suicide prevention, use high-quality research methods to better understand and explain suicidal behavior, provide effective intervention and treatment options for both suicide prevention and support. after suicide and eliminating the stigma associated with suicidal behavior.
