Activities in the field of popularization and promotion of science
There are more and more visits by students from foreign faculties and various groups and organizations that also visit our faculty. A good example of such cooperation is, for example, the annual meeting of biology mentors, which is organized in cooperation with the Association for Technical Culture of Slovenia.
Of course, students also participate in most of the activities, and members of the Association of Biopsychology Students and the Society of Conservation Biologists Biodiva are particularly active.
Within the framework of a series of popular lectures Famnit Excursions into the Mathematical Universe on the topics of mathematics and its role in the modern world, participants attended different lectures given by dr. Klen Čopič Pucihar (Digital technologies - When the interplay between digital and real creates a new reality), dr. Jan Grošelj (Optimization and Planning of Transportation in GoOpti), dr. Nina Chiarelli (Everyday Problems - Mathematical Solutions - Examples of Using Domination in Graphs), dr. Jasna Prezelj (Soap bubbles, chains, trunks and the cathedral of St. Paul), dr. Gaj Vidmar (What do horse kicks, quadruplets, brewer's yeasts and call centers have in common? Poisson's division) and dr. Nastja Cepak (Chains + data = blockchain).
The Department of Biodiversity offered a rich programme of lectures as part of Famnit Biological Evenings given by: Klemen Leonard (Healthy Seas - How to Become Active in the Environment), Milena Gucić (Use, Management and Conservation of Natural Resources in Baja California (Lower California), Mexico), dr. Laura Iacolina (The wild boar, it's complicated), dr. Živa Justinek (The Pursuit of Sumatra Forest Singers), dr. Tomaž Gorenc (What Does the Environmental Impact Tell Us?), Sabina Francek Ivović and dr. Vladimir Ivović (The Galapagos - A Thousand Faces of Nature) and Tadeja Kuret (Is it really all about genes and how we influence our offspring with our lifestyles).
In the first months of the year, we successfully organized two mathematical days. The first one was in January, when 95 students from Koper Gymnasium visited the Faculty. The other was in April with 111 students from Oskar Kovačič Elementary School, Ledina Elementary School, Šenčur Elementary School, Ivan Rob Šempeter Elementary School and Ruše Elementary School, which brought a pleasant spring atmosphere to the faculty.
In May, we also took care of promoting mathematics abroad. On Thursday, May 2nd, 16 students of the last year of the three high schools in Prishtina, »Sami Frashëri«, »Xhevdet Doda« and »Specialized Mathematics Gymnasium« participated in the third implementation of the International Mathematics Competition of the University of Primorska, Kosovo. The competition was organized and conducted by UP FAMNIT professors with the help of students of the mathematics, who, two years ago, gave the initiative to organize this competition.
The Department of Applied Science was also very active in promoting science in schools, especially in organizing workshops in which our researchers were presenting the production of oil and the ways of growing of Helichrysum italicum.
At the end of August we successfully organized the 9th Famnit Summer Camp - Math is cool, for pupils from Slovenia and abroad. While the mathematics department's summer school is a tradition, this year's the psychology department's summer school saw its premiere. From July 22 to 24, participants in the (Bio)psychological Summer School, which was aimed at students of (bio)psychology and related fields, as well as all those interested in research and its importance in psychological practice, attended lectures that were conducted by experts and researchers in various fields.
An important event, attended by faculty, researchers and students of the faculty, is the pan-European Researchers' Night, which was held as part of the nationwide Science for Life project. On Friday, September 27, 2019, participants at various locations in Koper, including the facilities of our Faculty, participated in interesting experiments, workshops, visits and socialized with researchers in the festival atmosphere.

At the same time, we continue to cooperate with other institutions in the field of nature protection, health care and psychosocial assistance, in which our students undertake study practices. Collaboration with non-governmental organizations and industry is also evident in the classrooms, as our faculty is regularly visited by practitioners both in lectures and seminars. Noteworthy cooperation with the economy is also being carried out within the framework of activities organized by the UIP of the University Development Center and the Primorska incubator for students.
New study programmes
A new Master's program in Data Science has also been launched at UP FAMNIT in the academic year 2019/2020. The program is implemented in Slovenian and English language. This is the first and only study programme of this kind in Slovenia, which was also supported by ten Slovenian companies and institutions in the accreditation process.
At the conclusion of 2019, the International Joint Doctoral Study Programme of Computer Science was also approved, which will be implemented at UP FAMNIT and the University of St. Andrews (School of Computer Science).
