The objective of the project is to identify the most relevant practical optimization problems of the waste wood value chain and provide efficient solution methods through mathematical modelling and the development of efficient heuristic algorithms. A thorough literature review of the reverse logistics network will be carried out to identify its major problems and processes and select the most important ones to be optimized. Emphasis will be put on identifying the unique real-world constraints and characteristics of these problems.
Once the relevant problems have been selected, multi-objective mathematical models will be formulated to describe them. Besides the traditional objectives of operational costs and revenue, these models will also consider environmental impact. In general, logistics processes are usually large and complex problems, and the same is expected in this specialized field as well. Because of this, efficient heuristic algorithms will also be developed to help the solution process of the formulated models.
