The programme group conducts research in the field of cognitive computing, which comprises sub-fields that have in common that their research takes into account and integrates the cognitive properties and needs of end-users: data capture, data storage, user modelling, interaction and algorithms.
Research will focus on modelling users in terms of cognitive models (e.g. emotions, personality), which will be predicted from user traces on social media using artificial intelligence methods. To achieve this goal, good quality data, efficient storage, effective algorithms and data structures are needed to model users and to interact with the device in a user-friendly way.
Standard methodology used in cognitive computing research will be applied. The most important steps are the design of the experiment, the construction of the interactive solution, data capture, data processing, learning of predictive models and evaluation. For user-oriented research in this field, it is also essential that it is considered at all stages of the implementation and that the research can be iterative. Theoretical research will use the usual analytical procedures for proposing new algorithms and assessing their algorithmic complexity.
